The mainstream can not survive without the outsiders. The shaman/medicine man who dresses like the women, eats the kinds of psychoactive fungus, plants, and venoms that almost killed William S. Burroughs, and never marries or has children of his own is, believe it or not, an evolutionary necessity. That may seem counter-intuitive, but without the occasional freak, you cannot guarantee the survival of any tribe, nor of our species.
It really does make fun of us too, and our completely unsubstantiated cockiness --
which is really just a rebellion against mainstream's completely unsubstantiated cockiness.
In other words, we're competing with the mainstream. Of course. As always. And because there shouldn't be just one controlling media paradigm.
However, we would accept just one media paradigm if it were an uncontrolling one.
After all, a fair monopoly is Better than several companies engaged in unfair competition.
